Cognia Standard 14
Students develop STEM skills and cross-cutting competencies that support workforce readiness CCSD Standard 2.1 Learners work independently and collaboratively in an inquiry-based learning environment that encourages finding creative solutions to authentic (real-world) and complex problems using the engineering design/creative process |
Learning integrates Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking developing soft skills and teamwork.
The focus of the 4C's of 21st Century Skills allowed students to become engaged in the world around them - asking "Why?". Project Based Learning developed soft skills of collaboration and communication.

Cognia Standard 13
Students demonstrate STEM content knowledge representative of STEM literacy outcomes that prepare them for the next level of learning and work CCSD Standard 2.1 Learners work independently and collaboratively in an inquiry-based learning environment that encourages finding creative solutions to authentic (real-world) and complex problems using the engineering design/creative process |
Learners engage in investigative research and/or apply the Engineering Design/Creative Process to develop solutions to real-world problems.
Questions, Imagination, Plan, Creation, and Improvement were used to creatively problem solve. Often a mix of Technology and Art Standards were used as the tools to express the solutions. The ultimate goal is for students to be problem-solvers and innovators. The process was used collaboratively across all subjects. Adding our Science Enrichment Program emphasized these goals.
Cognia Standard 9
School provides within-school and extra-curricular opportunities for students to extend STEM learning CCSD Standard 2.1 Learners work independently and collaboratively in an inquiry-based learning environment that encourages finding creative solutions to authentic (real-world) and complex problems using the engineering design/creative process |
Students have the opportunity to participate in clubs, groups, and competitions.
Mabry enjoys a myriad of staff-led clubs and competitions. These allow students to join where they can thrive, extend classroom learning, and provide for a deeper knowledge. Students create relationships, enhance SEL skills, increase motivation and growth mindset through competition.
Cognia Standard 10
Students demonstrate their learning through performance-based assessments and have opportunities to develop self-assessment and self-monitoring skills CCSD Standard 2.2 Learners conduct investigative research to make claims, collect evidence, analyze data and communicate their findings using digital and non-digital resources |
Students demonstrate thinking (claims, evidence, and reasoning) and attempt to make sense of data collected.
These projects are meant to improve the ability of students to interpret, analyze, and present data in a meaningful way.

Learners are producers and not merely consumers of technology through development in digital spaces.
The process of creating technology products develops higher-level thinking skills, increases technology literacy, and develops artistic skills. By providing these building blocks, students learn to express themselves meaningful, problem-solve, and prepare for their future.
Learners are encouraged to self-assess (using rubrics, checklists, etc.) and reflect on their learning.
STEAM assessments should be authentic and meaningful. They measure innovation, problem-solving ability, and use of 21st Century skills. Self-assessment allows both students and teachers to detect strengths and weaknesses and to improve.
AND THEN....IT WAS VIRTUAL LEARNING
Mabry students and staff continued to include STEAM in their daily teaching. We found it was a way to keep students engaged and participatory. Creativity and SEL became very important. Below are a few of our projects from Spring 2020.
